My Top Ten Favorite Magic Cards #8

Pelakka Wurn is cool on so many levels. It's like two Loxodon Hierarchics combined into one, gaining you 7 life along with such a big body is almost always a big set back to your opponents. Then if they do decide to kill it (and who doesn't want to kill a 7/7 trampler?) you get a card to replace it. Life gain and big creatures are especially good and multiplayer and this guy has both while also being helpful against mass destruction, one of the best strategies in multiplayer.

This card epitomizes many of the reasons that Rise of Eldrazi is one of my favorite sets ever. What other set would this kind of card be printed at uncommon? What other set would this be one of the best uncommons in draft? Any limited format where you can draft multiples of this guy and total dominate is awesome by me and was probably one of the reasons I did so well in ROE drafts over the summer: it was such a natural strategy for me as a timmy and multiplayer enthusiast. And the crazy thing is this guy is probably better than any eldrazi in draft too.

Overall, Pelakka Wurm is a home run, out of the park, over the fence and he has won my heart and we are getting married.

  1. I completely agree, it's such a sweet card for an uncommon. Additionally, it's the kind of card that a few years ago would have been a rare, easy. But instead its an uncommon and since it has almost no tournament impact, it's not a crazy $2 uncommon either. Easy to pick up and fun to play. I wish you two the best of luck in your future. I hope she can cook as well as she can play magic.

  2. Pelakka Wurm is the shit. It's mana cost is too cheap for all the awesomeness you're getting. ROE draftin was crazy. What with all the gigantor creatures. Clash of the Titans man. However, if Pelakka Wurm is a home run then what is Emrakul? An inside the park grand slam?

  3. What's all this sports jibber-jabber? The only kind of grand slam I know about is the Denny's Grand Slam breakfast meal. Yum! I assume that's what you're referring to. Although why you would want to hit a delicious Denny's meal outside of a park is beyond me. Emrakul is pretty crazy. Veronica calls him "the Big Stinky." Though 15 mana is way more difficult to get than seven...it's like double or something.

  4. Emrakul is so hard to cast, that it is like one of those rare but awesome events in baseball like an inside the park grand slam or Jose Canseco getting hit on the head with the ball causing a home run.

  5. That, or like when Essarhaddon killed his brother to become king of the Assyrian empire. No one saw that coming! And when he conquered Egypt, the first since the Hyksos, that was something and a half. That's suitably obscure, like sports, right?

  6. First down, Justin!
One question though: Was Essarhaddon injecting steroids into his brother's buttocks like Jose Canseco?

  7. A tough question, they certainly didn't call it steroids back then, but Inanna's super happy fun juice. And it wasn't injected into his buttocks but administered through ancient suppository technology, liquid sealed in shaved yak skin. A tougher time for sure, although these are the same people that drink beer with little chunks of cheese and meat floating around in it. This is not a generation to be messed with.

  8. Damn, that drinking beer with chunks of cheese and meat is total badass. I say we try this with some of that good bratwurst during your bachelor party.
