House Rules Question

Golden WishHedron Alignment

How do the wishes work in our house rules? If I am playing a deck with 4 Hedron Alignment, should I be allowed to search up another Hedron Alignment from outside the deck with Golden Wish? California Pedophile Skateboarding enthusiasts want to know.

  1. I assume this is for 60 card casual, since you've got 4 Hedron Alignments. I know in competitive games wishes only get you sideboard cards, but most casual decks don't have sideboards. According to magiccards.info: "In a sanctioned event, a card that's "outside the game" is one that's in your sideboard. In an unsanctioned event, you may choose any card from your collection." Based on this I'd say you should be able to get an additional Hedron Alignment. BUT I'd say you shouldn't keep the spare one in deck box where your Hedron Alignment deck is, you should have to go to a binder or box of cards and pull it out.

Of course, that's like just my opinion man.

  2. Yes, this is 60 card casual. So, do you think that there should be a limit to the number of cards you can set aside to search for with golden wish? Could I have like a stack of 100 different cards to have counters to lots of different game situations or is that just starting to get cheesy?

    Joey, what do you think?

  3. I think the spirit of the card is to go get whatever, with no set limit. But it feels less random when you have a predetermined stack or set of cards. I really like the idea of someone casting this and then hunting through their binder for the right card in the situation. That said, if they take too long I could see that being tedious. Maybe we put a 60 second time limit to find it, but they can keep a rare binder within reach. I may...be over complicating things.

  4. This is a tricky question. Banning something seems to go against the spirit of our casual play group. I'd say just do up to a 15 card sideboard and have only 4 copies of every card. I'm guessing that was the way they played the wish cards in tournaments back when they were in standard.

Also, real talk: Wishes are lame. That's just my two cents.

  5. Joey's right about wish sideboards in tournament play. I'm fine with that if that's the consensus. But why are wishes lame? I'm not disagreeing, just curious.

  6. I'd like to think they're lame if you use them to get any card you want from outside the game. Its almost cheating. I suppose if you select from the sideboard only they aren't as lame.

  7. Yeah, that makes sense. Breaking the 4 of rule seems to be a pretty fundamental rule of magic and something that could get dicey pretty easily. More than 4 hedron alignments or battle of the wits seems not in the spirit of what those cards are trying to do. It makes those decks a lot more resilient to hate. I like the idea of a 15 card sideboard. One more question: If a card is already removed from the game by some other effect (i.e. STP or something) could you use a wish to search for it?

  8. I would say no, because technically those cards are not removed from the game anymore, they are in the exile zone (or something like that) and there are cards that interact with the exile zone specifically but the wishes do not.

  9. Whoa whoa whoa.

I didn't realize that this was a way of breaking the 4 of rule. That makes wishes even lamer and makes me think our decision was the right one.

  10. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Exiled cards are still really a part of the game, not outside of it.

I think that including wishes then wouldn't really help my hedron alignment multiplayer deck then, but thanks for helping clarify. I had never really considered what these wishes should do in multiplayer.
